X3: Revenge of the Unheralded Mutants

One of the pleasures of watching the X-Men movies -- along with Sir Ian McKellen's line readings and Hugh Jackman in an undershirt -- is seeing which new mutants get snuck into each new film. In the first installment, for example, we got a glimpse of Bobby Drake, aka Iceman; in the second film, he played a much more prominent role. Meanwhile, X2 featured such additions as Nightcrawler (the blue guy), Colossus (the steel-skinned, apparently non-Russian-in-the-movie guy), Kitty Pryde (the phase-through-walls- and-her-own-pillow girl), and Screamy McDrumpopper, perhaps better known as Siren.

Of course, much of the fun is seeing how your favourite mutants from the comic books -- and their uncanny abilities -- are translated to the big screen. In anticipation of the third X-Men film, we at Fametracker have assembled a list of our favourite, lesser-known mutants from X-Men lore. Let's hope we'll get a glimpse of their dazzling mutant powers in the franchise's upcoming chapter:

Abacus

Mutant Power: Able to solve complicated mathematical problems slightly faster than someone using a calculator
How This Helps the X-Men: She's the perfect foil for when they're having a battle that involves solving math, and they're fighting the evil mutant Calculator.

Migraine

Mutant Power: Uncannily sensitive to changes in the barometric pressure, Migraine can predict oncoming storms caused by high-pressure systems. She knows when storms are coming because she is hit with a crippling migraine and bed-ridden.
How This Helps the X-Men: If a storm is coming and the team is about to fly their jet, Migraine can warn them that they might want to postpone the flight if it's non-essential. Or Storm could then divert the storm, allowing the team to fly the jet safely as planned, while Migraine stays at home in bed and watches the Game Show Network.

Ream

Mutant Power: Inflicting paper cuts on others
How This Helps the X-Men: Ream might end a fight looking like the loser -- blackened eyes, missing teeth, and so on -- but the supposed winner will actually be covered in tiny scratches that sort of chafe. And consider this: Ream's ability to inflict paper cuts isn't confined to an opponent's fingertips. Think about some other, more sensitive locations of your body on which you would hate to get paper cuts -- Ream could cut you there, too!

Shard

Mutant Power: Turns light into pottery
How This Helps the X-Men: Pottery is always useful to have on hand, whether for decorative storage or as something to hand to another, stronger mutant, who can hurl it at the bad guy. And if you happen to accidentally break a piece, don't worry -- there's plenty of light to go around! Or should we say -- pottery!

The Rack

Mutant Power: Is able to elongate his already lean torso by several inches by stretching himself in slow, painful increments
How This Helps the X-Men: If perhaps someone needs something that's on a top shelf, The Rack could elongate himself and grab it, as long as they don't need it in a hurry and they don't mind his horrible screaming.

Leopard

Mutant Power: Can make freckles appear and disappear on her skin
How This Helps the X-Men: Primarily deployed for recon missions, since Leopard can infiltrate enemy strongholds virtually without detection: whoever sees her will describe her as "this girl who had freckles all on her nose and cheeks" but, if her pursuers try to match this description to Leopard, she can make those freckles disappear, thus escaping capture.

The Canner

Mutant Power: Instantly putting things in cans
How This Helps the X-Men: Serves the X-Men by making sure their lunches are safely stored in vacuum containers until mealtime. Often works in tandem with Iceman to keep snacks appropriately packaged and chilled. Canner also once stopped a tidal wave by instantly canning the seawater in millions of one-quart Mason jars.

The Operator

Mutant Power: Has an amazing ability to accurately piece together conversational snippets that have been scrambled during games of "Broken Telephone"
How This Helps the X-Men: When Wolverine tells Rogue to tell Iceman to tell Storm something, the team can't afford for that message to be scrambled. Enter The Operator! Or Wolverine could just call Storm directly, though sometimes that's not possible, depending on what each of them is doing at the time.

Citra

Mutant Power: Harnessing the many uses of citrus fruit
How This Helps the X-Men: Every piece of citrus fruit -- be it grapefruit, lime, or tangelo -- is at Citra's mercy, as she puts them to work oiling the floors at Charles Xavier's School for the Gifted to blinding her opponents by squeezing their acidic juices into their eyes to preparing Wolverine's customary Sunday-morning mimosa.

N-Trest

Mutant Power: Manipulating people's credit ratings
How This Helps the X-Men: Specializes in the sneak attack: messing with an opponent's credit rating. N-Trest and Mystique have been mortal enemies ever since he was personally responsible for her getting turned down for a boat loan.
